CLAIRE MARTIN has been awarded the OBE for ‘services to music’

12 June 2011

Claire Martin is set to play the Harrogate Theatre on 24 July and just has been awarded an OBE for services to music.

Winner of the 2010 British Jazz Awards for best female vocalist and currently performing at The Algonquin NYC, Claire Martin has been a driving force behind the UK jazz scene for the past 25 years and has won many accolades, including the British Jazz Awards no less than six times. Claire’s busy schedule not only includes recording and touring but continually raising the awareness and profile of jazz as a broadcaster on the BBC Radio 3 programme, Jazz Line-Up, which she has co-presented for the last 11 years.

Claire is overwhelmed and delighted to be receiving such an honour, saying:

“Having dedicated my life to singing and to jazz music, it is a terrific feeling and an honour to gain such public recognition, especially for this wonderful art form, which so often gets overlooked. I wish to thank all the world class musicians who have, over the years, worked with me to create the music of which I am immensely proud. Enormous thanks also to my record label, Linn Records who have afforded me the luxury of total artistic freedom throughout my career. I look forward to more exciting music-making and to keeping the jazz flame burning brightly.”

Kula are very proud to be presenting Claire, with Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, at the Harrogate Theatre as part of the Harrogate Fringe 2011. Come and see the BEST female UK jazz singer!

“Claire is unbeatable and sets the standard for all us singers.” (Jamie Cullum)
