Gift in Memory Supports Local Charity’s Dementia Work

17 December 2018

A Harrogate man who passed away this year following a diagnosis of early-onset dementia, has had a donation made in his memory to The Avalon Group, the local charity who supported him to live well during his illness.

Darren Pacey was a fitness enthusiast, successful Marketing professional and loving father. His family approached Avalon to support him to maintain an active lifestyle after finding out he had Pick’s (or frontotemporal) dementia at just 44 years-of-age.

Darren continued to enjoy such activities as running, hill walking and cycling during the time he was supported by Avalon, but sadly his symptoms became worse and eventually Darren required full-time care to meet his needs.

At his funeral this year, Darren’s family requested that gifts in memory be collected and donated to The Avalon Group, so that more support can be given to Harrogate people living with dementia, which will enable them to live full lives.

Avalon CEO Larry Hollando said:

It is difficult for anybody to have to deal with a diagnosis such as this, particularly in a person so young. Darren committed to living the best life possible in the time that he had, and we are proud to have supported him to do just that. He will be sadly missed.
