Former students of the St Aidan’s and St John Fisher Associated Sixth Form are looking forward to exciting new challenges having collected excellent results in their A Level and Applied Level 3 qualifications.
Head of St John Fisher, Jo Langstaff, praised the commitment of students and staff alike:
Teachers have coped admirably with the demands of new specifications in many subjects and the attraction of unconditional offers from universities has also not affected students’ ambitions.
Amongst many high achievers, 11 students have secured places at Oxford or Cambridge University and 10 are heading for careers in Medicine or Veterinary Science.
According to UCAS, 333 students from the Association are intending to move into Higher Education this year, 54% of whom are aspiring to courses at Russell Group universities. A wide range of disciplines has proved successful, with significant numbers of students heading for courses as diverse as History, Biology and Business Management. Shortage areas including Modern Languages and Engineering are also popular and 18 students have gained places on specialist Performing Arts courses.
Beyond the university option, 66 former students are planning a life-changing gap year experience and 25 have gained much sought-after apprenticeship places in areas including accountancy, surveying and food production.
John Wood, Headteacher of St Aidan’s, expressed delight at the performance and destinations of the year group:
It is clear that the bespoke careers guidance provided in the Association is helping each student to identify and apply for their best routes beyond school.
This service is unique to the Association and is supported by the hard work of staff and the students themselves in leading our students to the courses and careers which are right for them – perhaps the essential aim of Sixth Form education.
