The winner of the first ever Best of Yorkshire Pie Competition at Tockwith Show has been presented with his trophy.
Judged by author Jilly Cliff and BBC Radio York presenter Jonathan Cowap, the competition saw pie-makers combine regional flavours in a bid to achieve the perfect Yorkshire pie.
Kevin Wilson of Appleton’s Butchers in Wetherby impressed the judges with his pork pie topped with mushy peas – and he has already put the recipe into production and on sale in his four shops.
Show vice-chairman Allan Robinson, who presented the trophy to Mr Wilson, said:
I came up with the idea of a Yorkshire pie competition for this year because it’s such an iconic symbol of our region.
We had seven entries from shops and butchers across the area, so I’m pleased it proved a hit. I know the judges had their work cut out deciding which was the best, but having tasted Kevin’s entry I’m sure they made the right choice!
The trophy and rosette have now gone on display in Appleton’s Wetherby shop window and are already proving a talking point among customers keen to sample the award-winning Best of Yorkshire pie.
