Rossett students get a taste of life after Sixth Form in Next Steps Week

16 July 2018

Year 12 students have been inspired to consider the opportunities on offer after sixth form as part of a careers initiative at Rossett School.

During Next Steps Week, pupils took part in a variety of activities focusing on university, employment and apprenticeships.

The week kicked off with a community engagement day focusing on teamwork and collaboration skills as students supported local based projects. Sixth formers also joined in a series of workshops as part of a university options day focusing on writing applications and personal statements followed by a Next Steps UCAS information evening.

Other activities included a careers event with nearly 30 speakers including 12 former students, with talks focusing on a range of professions including law, pharmaceuticals, veterinary science, sports development and education.

Year 12s had the opportunity to attend seminars and information sessions to support their future decision-making at a UCAS convention hosted by Leeds Beckett University.

Next Steps Week culminated with a visit to York University where students attended lectures and seminars relating to their chosen fields of interest.

Rossett careers advisor Karen Morgan also hosted an apprenticeship day in school with Harrogate-based FinancialForce, including a talk from a former student who is currently participating in an apprenticeship scheme.

Headteacher Helen Woodcock said:

Next Steps Week gives students the opportunity to see for themselves what is on offer and to be inspired by others excelling in their chosen professions.

Many of our Year 12 pupils have a clear picture of what they would like to do in the future but others are as yet undecided. By providing useful information and giving students a first-hand insight into many careers, we aim to provide the right level of support when it comes to considering ‘next steps’ after school.
