The recent Ripon Cathedral in the Frame art exhibition which ran for 10 days, was a success in raising £6,000 for Ripon Cathedral Renewed the future developments of Ripon Cathedral.
Molly Barrs, fundraising event officer at the cathedral said:
This was the first event of this type for the Cathedral, the idea of turning ‘old art into a new build’ was the aim of the exhibition, to show cased donated works of art for sale and at affordable prices. I was grateful to Adam Schoon for his expertise in valuing the art. . The event attracted much publicity and media from all over Yorkshire and beyond.
The free exhibition included internal and external views of the Cathedral, as well as original watercolours and prints. Part of the cathedral’s own collection was also on view, as well as original works of Ripon Cathedral on loan from Newby Hall.
Rob Pointon was the artist in residence, he painted live both inside the cathedral and also around the grounds. He has produced some stunning original art which will be on show again at this year’s Dean’s Banquet in September when he will once again be painting live during the evening.

A number of popular events also took place throughout the exhibition period including a private tour of the Tudor Portraits in Minster house, a talk by artist Harold Gosney, who gave a wonderful talk on the stunning biblical sculptures that are permanently on show at Ripon Cathedral and there was also a unique opportunity to photograph an empty cathedral at sunrise which was popular with the local Photographic Society. Mark Littler kindly gave his time to value treasures belonging to the general public during the valuation day.
Local artist Simon Balme exhibited specially commissioned paintings of the cathedral, and photographer Joseph Priestley exhibited some original photographs on canvas, copies of which were available to order.
Organisers say they are very thankful and grateful to all the supporters who donated artworks, everyone who purchased works, the volunteers for their help and all those who attended the exhibition.
