Police are appealing for the driver of a blue car to come forward following a serious road traffic collision.

It occurred between Helperby and Fawdington, near to Thornton Bridge, on Saturday 7 May at 11am involving a pedal cycle and a horse which were being ridden by a husband and wife.

A 52-year-old local woman who was riding the horse suffered a dislocated shoulder and bruising when she was thrown from the horse. She was taken to Harrogate District Hospital by road ambulance for treatment and has now been discharged. Her 54-year-old husband was struck by the horse. He was taken to St James’ Hospital, Leeds by air ambulance with serious internal injuries, where he currently remains in a stable condition.

Just prior to the incident a blue car passed the couple.

Traffic Constable Lee Hauxwell, of the force’s Roads Policing Group, said: “I need to speak with the driver and occupants of the blue car as I believe that they have vital information about the cause of the incident. I urge them to come forward and contact me as soon as possible.

“A witness has suggested that the car may be a Volkswagen, although this has been confirmed.”
