Fire at waste recycling plant in Thirsk now under control

4 May 2011

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have been dealing with overnight and throughout today a large fire involving 3 buildings of a waste recycling business at Thirsk industrial estate.

The fire at Todd Waste Management was reported at 19:20 yesterday (3 May 2011)

The fire service used its High Volume Pump (HVP) from Harrogate to supply water from the Cod Beck in Thirsk along with water from the local water mains supply. This enabled them to maintain a constant supply of water to 2 aerial ladder appliances and 2 ground appliances to bring the fire under control.

At its peak there were twelve fire engines at the incident overnight and by early morning good progress had been made reducing the number of appliances to 4 fire engines, 1 aerial platform and the high volume pump unit.

Due to the extent of the damage to the building structures fire fighters  have not entered any of the buildings involved. The cause of the fire is not yet known and investigations will commence when practically possible.

The fire service anticipate that they will be involved for the next 24 to 48 hours.

The incident Commander, Ben Cairns commented “There is no hazardous waster on site, it is domestic and commercial recycling material such as paper and cardboard”

Richard Todd, Managing Director of F D Todd and Sons said: “Whilst the fire has been significant, we are relieved that no-one was on site and there have been no injuries. Our staff reported for work as normal this morning and will continue to be fully deployed managing our business from our sites in Malton and York.

We would like to reassure the local community in Thirsk that our site is fully secure and the area is safe”
