Wheelchair-using residents of a Harrogate care home will have no difficulty accessing different floors in the event of a lift malfunction, thanks to a £5,000 grant from the George A Moore Foundation.
The donation to Disability Action Yorkshire – which this year celebrates its 80th anniversary – has been used to purchase a robotic stair climber for its Claro Road home.
And, within a matter of days of staff being trained in its usage, the device was called into action when a mechanical problem rendered the home’s lift unusable.
Mike Morris, Disability Action Yorkshire Senior Support Worker, said: The stair climber has been a great help already, and when we had a major problem with the lift, it meant that our customers where not stranded on the ground or first floors.
It doesn’t just climb stairs, it also descends them too. It’s fantastic!
Disability Action Yorkshire Chief Executive Jackie Snape said: We are extremely grateful to the George A Moore Foundation for this donation, which has allowed us to purchase this essential machine.
Additionally our customers will not be the only ones to benefit from it, as we can loan it – together with one of the trained members of staff – to other homes and businesses when they have lift issues.
As a charity we rely heavily on donations from businesses, individuals and grant-giving organisations. Without the support of the likes of the George A Moore Foundation the lives of our customers would be far less fulfilled.
