Garden waste collection winter break

2 November 2016

Harrogate Borough Council’s garden waste collection service will begin its winter break from next month (December 2016), when demand for the service reduces because of the low levels of green waste being produced.

The last garden waste collection for 2016 will be made between Monday 28 November and Friday 9 December depending on which week the garden waste is due to be collected.

The service will begin again between Monday 13 March and Friday 24 March 2017 depending on which is the resident’s usual green week collection day.

Garden waste can still be recycled during this period at the household waste recycling centres in Harrogate and Ripon.

Councillor Michael Harrison, the council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling, said:

Over the winter months, people do less gardening and as a result less garden waste is produced, so suspending the service is a sensible and cost effective option.

Residents in the Harrogate district are extremely keen to recycle both their household and garden waste and I would like to thank them for all their efforts in helping us to have a greener district.

All households with a garden waste bins should start putting them out again as part of their normal recycling collection week starting Monday 13  March or Monday 20 March.

Currently, the council is only able to offer a kerbside bin collection service for garden waste to approximately 60% of residential properties in the district. From summer 2017, the council will be introducing an optional subscription service for everyone who already has a garden waste wheelie bin. This will mean that from March 2018 it will be possible to offer the service to the majority of those residential properties not currently benefitting from it.  Information about the new service will be available early next year.
