Lockwoods’ Launches Cookery Competition to Celebrate British Food Fortnight

28 September 2016

Lockwoods’ restaurant on North Street, Ripon, has launched a competition to find the best British recipe from the area’s school children, to raise awareness of and celebrate British Food Fortnight, which runs till the 2 October 2016.

The restaurant has asked primary and secondary school children in Ripon to send in their best recipe using only British ingredients. Lockwoods’ owner Matthew Lockwood hopes that this will work with school curriculums to help make children more aware of the pleasures of growing, cooking and eating proper food.

Matthew Lockwood:

Good food is vital to children’s health and wellbeing. This competition will teach them about all the great British food we have, much of which we have right here on our doorstep.

Ten children from across the region will be invited to come and cook with Matthew and the head chef at Lockwoods. A chance to make great food with British ingredients in a busy restaurant kitchen, and an opportunity to witness first hand the short journey from fork to plate with the restaurant’s relationship with Ripon’s Workhouse Museum Garden.

British Food Fortnight, timed during the Harvest Festival, is the biggest annual, national celebration of British food and drink. And helps to promote the benefits of buying and eating from our home produced British larder.

Along with encouraging school children to think about British produce, Lockwoods has a special’s menu celebrating all things British, and where possible, local. Dishes include Theakstons’ braised blade of Yorkshire beef, horseradish dumplings, roast carrot, mash and onion gravy and Fisherman’s stew made from the best of native catch.

Matthew:

Much of what we use in the restaurant is farmed and grown locally, including plums which we have picked ourselves from the family garden. There is a wealth of great produce and suppliers in North Yorkshire, our aim with the competition is to show children more about local and British produce, and start their love of food and cooking at an early age.

Lockwoods special’s menu will run till Saturday 1st October, for details of to book a table go to http://www.lockwoodsrestaurant.co.uk/ or call 01765 607 555.
