Young people who have been inspired by the efforts of Team GB’s athletes in Rio are being offered a chance to see how far they can go by coming along to Harrogate High School this September and try out the indoors athletics club.
Run by Harrogate Borough Council, the sessions are held every Wednesday during term time and are open to 7-12 year olds of all abilities.
Youngsters can come down on Wednesday 7 September between 6.30pm and 7.30pm for a free taster and if they like it and want to continue they can sign up for sessions every Wednesday during term time – but there’s not commitment to do so.
Trained coaches will lead the session and will give feedback. There are no assessments in the first week, but some of the activities that the youngsters will take part in throughout the term will have scoring. The children will receive certificates for reaching certain levels so they will get to know what they are good at and where they can improve.
Next Wednesday the youngsters will be able to have a go at sprints, relays, the long jump, triple jump and many other track and field disciplines.
Councillor Stanley Lumley is Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport. He said:
The brilliant performances in Rio by Team GB’s track and field athletes were certainly inspirational, and hopefully some of our young people who were watching across the district will be inspired to get up and have a go for themselves.
The taster session is a great way to find out what they might like – and what they might like to train seriously for; it’s at athletics clubs like these across the country that some of our Olympians first caught the bug so who knows, in four years’ time in Tokyo we could be cheering on more Olympic success from the Harrogate district.
The athletics sessions cost £5.80 each, payable termly in advance.
