MP Andrew Jones helped Rossett students launch their very own EU referendum campaign during a visit to the school.
Students tapped into the Harrogate and Knaresborough MP’s expert knowledge ahead of campaign rally event and mock vote to be held at the school on Wednesday, June 15.
He also took part in a Question Time-style session with Year 9 and Year 13 history students and met with the school’s politics club.
Sociology teacher Luke Blackburn, who is co-ordinating the mock referendum, said:
Excitement is really building ahead of the big vote so it was great that our local MP was able to come into school and help the students with their campaigns.
I was really impressed with the students’ enthusiasm. It will be very interesting to see how the campaigning process develops and the decision the students make when they come to vote.
Teams from Years 7 & 8 and Years 9 & 10 will go head-to-head for votes and will be drumming up support for their Yes/No campaigns over the coming weeks, against a backdrop of lessons focusing on the European Union.
Year 10 student Joshua Wilson, leading the Yes campaign, is keen to raise awareness of the EU, encouraging future generations to use their vote. He is also hoping to foster links with other schools to spread the word about politics clubs.
Joshua said:
Having our MP visit the school was very informative and gave some people the chance to find out about more about the EU issue first-hand and in more depth.
He has given me some tips to help with the campaign. I’m hoping it will spur us on to victory!
