A section of the A1 will be closed for two nights as part of a major project to upgrade the dual carriageway to a three lane motorway between Leeming and Barton.
Contractors for Highways England will be installing permanent steel bridge beams on the bridge which carries Low Street over the A1 and the road will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 8am, on Friday 11 December and between 8pm Saturday 12 December until 10am Sunday 13 December.
The A1 will be fully closed northbound between junction 50 and Scotch Corner and southbound between Scotch Corner and junction 51 (Leeming Bar).
Highways England assistant project manager Charlotte Wright said:
It is vital to install these steel bridge beams now to enable further work to take place on the £380 million improvement scheme. We will be using new large cranes to lift the beams into place so need to close the road to do this safely.
We will be carrying out the work overnight when the road is at its quietest, and are encouraging people to plan their journeys, using the many alternative routes that will be signposted off the A1 closure, as well as to leave extra time to complete their journeys.
Clearly signed diversions will be in place and drivers are being advised to allow an extra 30 minutes to their journey time.
When completed, the A1 Leeming to Barton scheme will create a continuous motorway-standard route between London and Newcastle (including the M1 and A1M). It will also improve journey times and increase safety.
