Harrogate Borough Council have asked for £195 for planning permission for the installation of a Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at the World’s End Pub in Knaresborough.
Lizzie Hughes and husband, Alastair Hughes raised £2,000 to purchase the AED unit and cabinet that will be placed on an external wall of the pub, with permission of the owner.

Now we have raised money for two Public Access Defibrillators to be placed in our local community. One has already been received and is waiting to be placed at the with the full support of the owners.
However, Harrogate Borough Council have told us that we need to apply for full planning permission and pay £195 every time we place a defibrillator.
That’s 10% of the cost of a defib and cabinet.
These defibs are no more than 2ft by 2ft and have the potential to save lives.
Across the UK defibs are being placed in communities without the need for planning permission.
Councillor Rebecca Burnett, Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning said:
So far as we are aware planning permission is required for the installation of a defibrillator. We will look into this matter and speak to other authorities.
If planning permission is not required we will certainly ensure that the applicants know and that no fee is charged.
