Green-fingered youngsters will have the chance to get their hands on a trophy at this year’s Tockwith Show.
A new competition has been introduced in the horticultural section, for children aged under 10.
Even those without green fingers will find something to keep them entertained on the day. In the dog classes, there is a section for handlers aged between seven and 14, as well as young handler classes in the other animal categories.
Young visitors are also encouraged to take part in a wide variety of classes in the Children’s Section, including baking, art and photography, and can enter their favourite pets in the pet section, with categories including best furry pet and best name for a pet.
Show chairman Lisa Chasney said:
Tockwith Show is a very family-friendly event, and that extends to the many classes and competitions we run.
We want local children to get the most from their day, so this year they can enter more children’s classes than ever before.
Whether they are interested in animals, have a talent for baking or enjoy gardening, there is something to suit all our younger visitors.
Entries for all the classes, including those for children, are open until late July. Full details are available online at www.tockwithshow.org.uk, along with entry forms.
Paper copies are available on request by emailing secretary@tockwithshow.org.uk.
As well as the many classes, there are activities and events designed for a young audience in the Discovery Zone – all completely free of charge.
York Feltmakers will teach children to turn raw wool into small animals, puppets, book covers and more, which they can take home. Art Box will show visitors how to turn recycled material into works of art, while Yorkshire Hurdles will help families to make small hurdles using hazel coppice.
Meanwhile, Fruitscape will help budding gardeners – as well as older visitors – to identify any unusual fruits brought to the show, as well as giving advice on pruning and restoration of fruit trees and demonstrations of grafting throughout the day.
Lisa added:
The Discovery Zone was a big hit with our visitors last year so we’re pleased to say it’s returning again, with even more activities and demonstrations.
Anyone who joins us on the day is welcome to try their hand at any of the crafts on show – they’re ideal for families to do together. You never know what hidden talents you might uncover!
Tockwith Show takes place at the showfield on Cattal Moor Lane, Tockwith, on Sunday, August 2. Tickets are £7 if booked in advance (£8 on the gate) and available from the website. Children aged 16 and under go free when accompanied by an adult.
