Youngsters at independent prep school Belmont Grosvenor have stitched their way to success in an international quilting competition.
For the second year running, youngsters at the co-educational school, on the outskirts of Harrogate, entered a hand-crafted colourful quilt into the National Festival of Quilts held at the NEC in Birmingham.
And the pupils beat off tough competitions from youngsters from across Europe to take second place in the Primary School section of the competition. The winning quilt makers came from a school in Belgium.
Last year, the school’s quilt, based on Le Tour de France, won a ‘highly commended’ award for the Belmont Grosvenor School pupils.
Year 5 teacher Mrs Gillian Furniss, who entered the youngsters’ quilt at the festival, which attracts more than 30,000 from around the world each year, was delighted with the school’s success: Last year our Tour de France quilt won a ‘highly commended’ and this year we took second place. I was thrilled to bits when I heard the news.
It is a testament to all the hard work that the pupils put in and all the brilliant ideas they came up with to create the ‘In the Garden’ quilt.
The giant quilt, which will be hung in one of the ‘outstanding’ prep school’s dining rooms, is based on Belmont Grosvenor’s 20 acres of grounds, and includes colourful flowers, vegetables and even bugs.
Pupils from year 3 to year 6 spent art lessons, break times and club sessions creating the applique quilt – and youngsters Milly Nattress (left in pic) and Jessica Jones (right) were overjoyed the quilt had done so well in the competition.
Mrs Furniss said the quilt making had been something that all pupils at the school could get involved with.
Mrs Furniss added: It was a real collaborative effort for the youngsters – and it will now take pride of place in the school’s second dining room.
Belmont Grosvenor School is set in 20 acres of grounds just three miles from Harrogate. Along with its Magic Tree Nursery, the school caters for children from three months to 11 years.
