A new Discovery Zone at Tockwith Show will allow young visitors to witness the beginnings of life as chicks hatch live during the show.
Organised by Hatch It, the chick hatching will be part of the new area, which aims to educate children about rural life and food production.
The Discovery Zone will also feature York’s Chocolate Story, showing children the origins of the confectionary, and a willow weaving demonstration and workshops by Yorkshire Hurdles. Meanwhile, CBeebies is set to film on site during the day for new TV series Me and My Pet, which will focus on a local family showing their pony at Tockwith Show.
Show chairman Lisa Chasney said: Tockwith is a traditional show and part of that means a focus on educating visitors about country life and where their food comes from.
We’re very excited about the new Discovery Zone, which will have a wide range of activities for our younger visitors. In particular, the arrival of new chicks throughout the day is going to be very exciting, and a good chance for children to find out where chickens and eggs come from.
Meanwhile, Tockwith Show’s traditional programme of stalls, competitions and displays will be taking place as usual at show on Sunday, August 3. The schedule includes a dog scurry, tug of war, show jumping and parades of classic vehicles and vintage tractors.
The show will also feature traditional classes for sheep and pigs, as well as the popular fur and feather marquee. Outside, the Lilliput Forge will be giving demonstrations and producing goods for sale throughout the day.
There will also be demonstrations and workshops in the Farmers’ Market and Working Crafts marquees. The show will conclude with the President’s Charity Auction at 5pm, when produce from the various competitions throughout the day will be auctioned off to raise money for show president Sam Blacker’s chosen charities, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent institution.
Those two charities also stand to benefit from a charity walk taking place immediately after the show. Sam will be joined by show secretary Steve Ross for a coast to coast walk from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hoods Bay on the east coast of Yorkshire.
Steve said: We are hoping to update the website throughout the walk, which will take 14 days, although we are reliant on being able to access the internet along the route which may not always be possible.
We will have out sponsorship forms available throughout show day so anyone who wants to donate to two great charities can do so.
We hope our visitors will help us raise lots of money.
Lisa added: Tockwith Show began in 1945 and has been celebrating the best of the countryside and rural life since then.
It’s a fantastic day out, with something to keep visitors of all ages entertained, and plenty of food and drink to keep everyone happy. We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors old and new to the show on the first Sunday in August.
