Gateways School in Harewood is delighted to announce that from this September it will be supporting St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds for the academic year 2014-15.
Over the past academic year, Gateways School students have raised around £4,600 for the charity they have been supporting since last September – the Teenage Cancer Trust. Established 21 years ago, the Teenage Cancer Trust is dedicated to improving the lives of young people living with cancer.
St Gemma’s Hospice was chosen through a ballot from a number of charities proposed by Gateways School prefects, who gave presentations on each in special assemblies, and then students and staff were asked for vote for the charity they would most like the school to support. Opened in 1978, St Gemma’s is the largest hospice in Yorkshire and one of the largest in the country, providing end-of-life palliative care for patients with terminal illnesses and supporting their families and friends. In addition Gateways will also be supporting Mary’s Meals a charity, set up in 2002, which provides one meal every school day to impoverished children in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and South America.
Dr Tracy Johnson, Gateways School Headmistress, said: We are delighted to be able to support the valuable work of St Gemma’s Hospice which makes such a difference to those who are reaching the end of their lives, and to their families and friends.
