Figures released by the Government show that North Yorkshire Police and its partner agencies have continued to reduce crime across North Yorkshire and the City of York, but Chief Constable Dave Jones has warned of challenging times ahead.
In the 12 months up to 31 December 2013, the Office of National Statistics report shows that crime reduced by 2.2% across North Yorkshire and the City of York, meaning that the county has the lowest crime rate in England.
As a result, there were 769 fewer victims of crime compared to the previous 12 months, with a total of 34,472 crimes.
Broken down into the main crime categories, the figures show:
- domestic burglaries were reduced by 5% (92 fewer incidents, 1603 in total)
- there was a 2% reduction in theft (383 fewer incidents, 18,252 in total)
- incidents of criminal damage dropped by 8% (484 fewer incidents, 5655 in total)
- the number of people being injured as a result of violence fell by 3% (106 fewer victims, 3526 in total)
- a 10% reduction in offences against motor vehicle (285 fewer incidents, 2666 in total)
- the number of robberies increased by 6% (7 more incidents, 125 in total)
- sexual offences rose by 13% (75 more incidents dealt with, 672 in total). This rise is regarded as a positive reflection of the confidence victims have in North Yorkshire Police, particularly those making historical complaints. This was also influenced by Operation Yewtree and the opening of a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in York.
Chief Constable Dave Jones (pictured), of North Yorkshire Police, said: I am satisfied with the latest crime figures which demonstrate that the plans we have in place are working effectively, building on the success of recent years.
They reflect the hard work, dedication and commitment which our officers, staff and community partners display on a daily basis.
I would like to reassure residents across North Yorkshire and the City of York that we are not complacent. North Yorkshire Police will continue to make sure that our communities remain the safest places to live and work in the country.
As we have already achieved a significant reduction in crime in recent years, reducing it further poses a constant challenge. However, this is something which we have prepared for and have put plans in place to continue to suppress the impact of and maintain the fight against crime.
We will continue working closely with colleagues in councils and our partner agencies in the criminal justice system to ensure that offenders face the consequences of their actions.
We are determined to maintain the pressure on criminals so residents can not only be safe but also feel safe.
