Police are advising people to ensure they check the identity of police officers calling at their home following the theft of a car containing a police staff uniform and identity card.
The Ford Mondeo was stolen from West Tanfield, Ripon, at 3pm on Monday 14 April 2014.
The car is grey and has the registration number YC09PZT.
It is not believed that the car was deliberately targeted and this was an opportunistic theft.
When a police officer produces their identity card it will state “Police Warrant”, unlike the one which has been stolen which has the wording “Police Staff” in red.
Superintendent Lisa Winward, of North Yorkshire Police, said: I am advising people to ensure that they check the photograph thoroughly of any member of uniformed police staff or officers who call at their door to ensure they are genuine.
Home owners should always ask to see the officer’s warrant card and ensure that the picture is that of the officer.
If they are in any doubt about the officers identity they should ring the police on 101. A genuine police officer will not mind them doing this. If they refuse, do not let them in your house and call the police immediately on 999.
Anyone who is approached by an officer they are suspicious about or sees the stolen car, should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 immediately. Select option 1 and pass the details to the Force Control Room.
