A new Personnel Recovery Unit for wounded soldiers is to benefit from thousands of pounds raised in charity events by the chairman of North Yorkshire County Council.
County Councillor Bernard Bateman chose the Army Benevolent Fund as his personal charity for his year of office, which ends in May. So far, he has raised £16,000, with the major event still to come. The money he raises will be spent on the new PRU at Catterick.
Councillor Bateman said: I am so glad to be able to do something in my year of office to help the brave men and women who suffer injuries in the service of their country.
Their selflessness and bravery deserve all the support we as a community can give. I am delighted that Catterick will benefit from these events, and very gratified with the amount I have already been able to raise.
The most recent fund-raising event was a lunch at the Royal Baths Chinese restaurant in Harrogate, attended by more than 140 guests including the chairmen of every county council in the North of England.
The climax of Councillor Bateman’s initiative will be a charity concert at the Royal Halls on 3 May, featuring a celebration of the forthcoming Tour de France in music and song.
