Dj Trev’s guide to jiving in January

23 January 2014

“Jiving” – who says that? You Jive turkey. You’ve got to SASS it.

Good news! Apparently this Monday just gone was the most depressing day of the year, statistically speaking. So now we’ve all got through it, surely things are on the up? It is interesting that the real reason we have Christmas is because it was a celebration of the shortest day, once you get through that you only have to play the waiting game until summer arrives. However, if you think that the waiting games sucks (like Monopoly) there’s still a load of gear to get your gob round, even in this, the bleakest January I can remember in the industry (thanks a lot everyone doing “dry January”, because you’re not going out I can barely afford all the expensive narcotics I take (thanks a lot expensive narcotics peddlars for upping your prices, I blame the system (thanks a lot capitalism, I blame apathy for allowing its continued domination (thanks a lot apathy, I blame apathy on people taking drugs (thanks a lot drugs, if they just got drunk like normal people they wouldn’t need drugs (thanks a lot dry January))))) What I’m saying is: Don’t do drugs, go out instead).

In case, for some reason, you’ve not read this column the last few weeks (perhaps you had something more rewarding and worthwhile to do, like sticking heated rusty pins in your eyes) I have gone on a bit this year, so this week I’m going to keep it trim and short, which, ladies, is the least you can do isn’t it? Awesomely, I can keep it brief and pretend that I’m doing that as a favor to you, whereas in all honesty it’s because I’ve got loads of work on that actually pays, and I kind of need to get to that.

One of the things I’m doing is a Battle of the Bands at Rehab, that is starting on the 2nd of March. I’m sorting out the line up’s right now, so if you are in a band and would like to play

please message me on facebook (or my mobile if you have that number, you can usually find it written on the walls in gents toilets) so I can get you a date – but listen, I’m only looking for bands from Harrogate and the surrounding area, it’s a Harrogate battle of the bands and am not after bands from Preston, for example. Mainly because Preston scares me.

Also off in the future, Kasiuss, legendary band of Harrogate folklore, are reforming for what seems to be a one off gig at Christies on Friday 28th Feb, more on that closer to the time.

In the more immediate future, there are a couple of one off events on, which is cool as generally whilst Saturday naturally has loads on, it tends to be the same in week in week out, so leaves little scope for my limited skills in the field of talking about stuff. Party animal and multi-instruMENTALIST Dan Burnette has an R’n’B night at Grewelthorpe Hall. I’m not sure that Grewelthorpe is inside my catchment area, but The Devonshire Pub, Devonshire Place (obviously) definitely is, and they have Rob Donelly live on Saturday too.

Whilst celebrating my last Saturday off in the rubbish January enforced holiday period, I went to Pitcher and Piano last week and, once I’d enjoyed looking at all the fit birds, was immediately reminded that the beer I had there last time (that I couldn’t remember the name of in last weeks column) was Vedette. It’s from the people who make Duvel and is just, just, great. You should try a pint there, this Sunday, when they have Kat Eaton playing, who comes from Sheffield and is fit. I also had a brilliant pint of the Bernard unfiltered at The Taps near the train station on Saturday. Alas, that’s all the drinking I’ve really done this week as, theoretically, I was also going to do the “Dry January” thing but I decided that by stopping spending money I would probably make the fragile economy collapse, as that’s how it works. Should you feel the need to help kickstart the UK’s economic growth singlehandedly, here are this week’s listings of whats on:

I currently Dj Thursdays at Lure bar, running my quiz from 8pm, Fridays I’m in Leeds Electric Press Revolution, Saturdays I could be anywhere, sometimes I’m in Georgie’s Bar in Driffield, perhaps I’m back at The Den, or maybe you could see me playing a private party (if so, please don’t try talk to me, seriously, I charge EXTORTIONATE rates for those so like to look like I’m actually working) I could be covering a gig at Rehab or Rev’s, or more likely you’ll see me in the discount booze aisle of a local supermarket wondering how it all went wrong. And Sunday’s I’m at rehab, making it all go wrong.

Thanks for reading, drink responsibly and don’t be loose with your affections.
