Despite very wet weather, the Harrogate and Ilkley-based fundraising committee, Acorn, held its annual charity golf day generously hosted for the second year in succession by Ilkley Golf Club. The event raised a wonderful £4,000 for its two charities – people with dementia and their carers in the Harrogate, Wetherby and Ripon area and for research into scleroderma disease at Leeds NHS Hospitals Trust.
The day began with a shotgun start and 67 golfers, undeterred by heavy rain, took part in the event which was followed by a dinner. The winning team was the quirkily-named Mrs Barr’s Boys, made up of Mike Crawshaw, John Crompton, John O’Kane and Mark Allan.
The runners-up were Newton which comprised Chris and Anthony Flather, Edward Binks and Martin Joyce with East Lake Solutions (Les and Andrew Johnson and Simon Kippax) coming in third. Other prizes were Nearest the Pin which was won by Julian Pitts, Ladies’ Longest Drive won by the Acorn Committee’s Maria Dawson and Men’s Longest Drive by Philip Ventner.
Prizes for the event were generously donated by David and Amanda Brayshaw of Low Graythwaite Hall, Hawkshead, Chris Walshaw of Byron and Brown and Ilkley Golf Club.
The next Acorn events are the Bridge Day at Goldsborough Hall, Goldsborough, near Knaresborough on Thursday 17th October and the Christmas Apres Ski Party on Saturday 7th December – tickets are still available for both events. For more information of these events go to www.acorncharity.org.uk
