An elderly Elm tree on Harrogate’s Montpellier Hill has come to the end of its natural life as a tree but plans are afoot to turn its trunk into a chainsaw sculpture at the end of the summer. This will give another 10 to 15 years of life for the tree for visitors and residents to enjoy.
Harrogate Borough Council’s Parks Team has commissioned Mick Burns, the renowned chainsaw sculptor, to create something magical from the tree trunk. Mick has already produced tree chainsaw sculptures in the Valley Gardens close to the New Zealand Garden creating a Marlin, a Kiwi and a Maori bench.
The Parks Team wants your ideas for what should be created from this large Elm tree.
Cllr Pat Jones, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services, says that the council is open to any suggestions:
We really want to hear all ideas, be as creative as you want. Why not come down and see the tree and make a sketch of what you think could take shape out of its trunk? Get the children involved and decide as a family.
Suggestions can be made by email: customerservices@harrogate.gov.uk Closing date is 2 September 2013.
The winner will be invited to meet Mick before he powers up his saw and they will also have their details recorded on a commemorative plaque
