York man Michael Bennison wanted in connection with attempted murder

Detectives searching for York man Michael Bennison believe he is avoiding arrest after attempting to murder his girlfriend.

The 28-year-old, currently of no fixed abode, is suspected of stabbing the 27-year-old woman with a bladed item at an address in the Boroughbridge Road area of the city at about 1pm on Friday 14 December 2012.

The woman was admitted to York District Hospital where she is receiving treatment for multiple wounds including a punctured lung. Her condition is described as “poorly”.

Extensive police enquiries have been ongoing to locate and arrest Bennison as the seriousness of his alleged actions emerged.

Officers believe Bennison is still in the York area and are continuing to ask the public to report any sighting of him to the police immediately.

However, people are urged not to approach him.

Bennison is described as white, aged 28, 5ft 10in tall, short brown hair, blue eyes with a strong build. Facially, he has a wide nose and a noticeable mole on both cheeks.

A photograph of him has been circulated to local and national media, as well as to police forces across country.

Detective Inspector Shaun Page, of North Yorkshire Police, said:

Michael Bennison is wanted for the attempted murder of his girlfriend who is currently in a poorly condition at hospital after suffering several wounds to her chest area.

We are still establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident that occurred  on Friday afternoon. However, from our enquiries so far, it is clear that Michael Bennison is evading the police and is refusing to assist the investigation.

Michael, if you see or hear this appeal, I urge you to do the right thing and hand yourself in to the police immediately. You are only going to make it harder on yourself in the long run.

If anyone has information that could assist the search for Michael Bennison, or someone may have spotted a man that matches his description, please contact the police without delay but do not approach him.
