The 58th Wing Harrogate Air Cadets got a Bonfire Night surprise on a recent visit to the House of Commons.
The Cadets were visiting Parliament as part of the Parliamentary Education Service scheme to highlight the work of Parliament. They enjoyed a tour of Commons and Lords and then took part in an interactive session looking at various aspects of Parliamentary activity.
Local MP Andrew Jones took a break from his busy schedule to meet the Cadets for a Question and Answer session after their other activities had finished. Mr Jones then took the youngsters to see the spot where the gunpowder was found back in 1605 after being planted there by Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators in an attempt to blow up Parliament. Guy Fawkes was born in York and lived some of his childhood in Scotton – part of Mr Jones’s parliamentary constituency.

Parliament is full of history and on 5 November it seemed appropriate to take the Air Cadets to visit the spot where the gunpowder plot was foiled. It is a part of history that links our area and Parliament and it was a pleasure to share it with them.
