A North Yorkshire furniture firm that specialises in one-off bespoke design has relaunched under a new name after undergoing a rebrand.
Dovetailors, previously known as Designer Makers, was originally set up as a bespoke furniture design and manufacturing business in 2005 by David Wilson, a cabinet maker with a PhD in engineering, and his wife Emmanuelle.
David said:
The nature of our work has changed significantly in recent years and has seen us become problem solvers for customers as much as cabinet makers, using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and cutting edge computer assisted design technology to complete unique projects, many of which break new creative ground.
People have often scoured the high street and internet for something of a certain size, shape or colour before coming to us after realising that what they want just doesn’t exist. Our expertise lies in the interpretation of their need and the ability to design something that matches those exact requirements.
Dovetailors designs and manufactures everything from small wooden accessories to complete kitchens at its workshop at Blubberhouses between Harrogate and Skipton and takes on work for customers across the UK.
Recent projects have included a three-legged chair constructed from solid maple and stainless steel and an extending dining table that stretches from two metres to six metres in length.
David said innovation was key to the firm’s continued success.
David added:
One of our young designer craftsmen Jason Winder recently launched his own contemporary furniture range with us and has brought some exciting new ideas into the business.
We are always keen to experiment with styles and materials and although traditional craftsmanship is extremely important to us we don’t let it hold us back and use whatever combination of modern and traditional techniques we feel will give the best results.
We believe our new logo and branding better reflects the way we work and honours the specialist nature of each project we undertake.
I am looking to place an unique commission for a side table to my design. I have made a collection of geode slices to be used like oyster veneers in the top of the table and underlit. The top of the table will have two layers, the bottom layer of glass, and the lighting should be in between these two layers so one panel of the side of the top should be removable to allow for the replacement of bulbs, wiring, etc. The frame should be solid hardwood. I have some well-seasoned walnut for this purpose. If I am right, i studied at leeds college of art at the same time as david wilson, 2003-5. we were not on the same course but I always admired his work. please let me know if you are interested.
