Residents need to complete and return their voter registration forms so their vote will count in the first ever Police and Crime Commissioner Elections taking place later this year.
The newly elected Commissioner will decide on the policing strategy, the force budget and will also have a remit to ensure community safety, crime and drugs prevention.
Elections will take place on 15 November and City of York Council is taking a lead role for the Police Authority area, with the council’s Chief Executive Kersten England selected as the Police Area Returning Officer for North Yorkshire and York.
All households in Yorkshire will receive their voter registration forms in the coming months, which will form part of the the revised Register of Electors that government called for all authorities to complete by 2 July.
Kersten England, Chief Executive of City of York Council and Returning Officer for York and North Yorkshire, said:
Some residents may not realise that they have to register every year. So, it’s really important that anyone who wants to vote completes and returns the registration form as soon as possible to ensure they’re able to take part in the upcoming election.
Residents can register by updating the annual canvass form with the details of everyone in their household who is eligible to vote and returning this to the council’s Electoral Team as soon as possible.
Residents can opt to have their details excluded from the edited register, which will mean their details cannot be bought by individuals and commercial organisations.
