North Yorkshire County Council is to carry out carriageway maintenance works on Kirkgate, Fishergate, Queen Street, and Duck Hill in Ripon.
The works are due to start on the 28th February 2011 and are expected to last up to 4 weeks.
Carriageway reconstruction on Kirkgate and the northern end of Duck Hill will involve taking up and replacing the existing block paving with a much more substantial foundation and improved bedding and pointing detail. This is the final stage of work carried out last November.
The work will require the section of Kirkgate between Queen Street and Duck Hill to be closed to vehicles 24 hours a day for the duration of the works, including weekends.
During the Kirkgate closure maintenance works to existing block paving will also take place on Queen Street (between Kirkgate and Market Place North), and on Fishergate (between Westgate and Market Place North). This work will require Queen Street and Fishergate to be closed to traffic overnight between 7pm and 6am, up to 7 days a week.
Queen Street and Fishergate will not be closed at the same time.
During the Kirkgate closure an alternative diversion route for all vehicles will be signed along Westgate, Blossomgate, Park Street, Studley Road, Mallorie Park Drive, Skellbank, Somerset Row and Water Skellgate.
During the Queen Street closure traffic will be diverted via Moss Arcade, Victoria Grove, Allhallowgate, St Mary’s Gate, Minster Road Bedern Bank, Skellgarths, Water Skellgate and High Skellgate.
During the Fishergate closure traffic will be diverted via Westgate, Blossomgate, Marshall Way and North Street.
Staff will be posted at either end of the closure to help with access enquiries and information regarding the works and diversion.
Vehicular access to properties and pedestrian access will be maintained wherever possible. Contractors will notify residents whose property access will be affected 24 hours in advance

County councillor Gareth Dadd, North Yorkshire’s executive member for highways said: “Although we will make every effort to minimise disruption, these improvement works will inevitably cause some inconvenience to motorists and local residents and businesses. We will of course do all we can to keep local businesses and residents informed, especially if there are any changes to the programme due to unforeseen circumstances.”
County councillor Bernard Bateman, local member for Ripon North said: “We are pressing ahead with these road improvements now to ensure the works are completed in time for Easter and the tourist season.”
