Harrogate Town 0 – 0 Blyth Spartans

10 April 2012

Harrogate Town FCHarrogate Town could only take a point from their clash with already relegated Blyth Spartans

The match was preceded by an impeccably observed minutes silence for life member and former trainer/physio, John Townrow.

Simon Weaver kept faith with the team that gained victory at Boston on Saturday.

A hard fought match began with Adam Nowakowski scything down ex Townie Wayne Phillips, but Town easily cleared Joe Kendrick’s free kick.

Town pressed with Luke Dean and Alex Meechan shooting wide, before Phillips roused the large visiting contingent with a mazy run and a shot just wide of the angle.

Both sides were finding it hard to keep their feet on the greasy surface and a Dean slip gave Spartans a corner from which Robert Dale lobbed narrowly over.

A fine cross field pass by Sam Hodgson found Glen Taylor in acres of space, but luckily for Town he shot well wide.

The half ended with the influential Paul Bolland picking out the unmarked Meechan who shot straight at David Knight, then Lee Elam tested Knight with a low drive from thirty yards out.

Town, who were obviously feeling Saturday’s exertions still in their legs, made an early second half substitution with Chib Chilaka replacing Paul Beesley.

However, Spartans, mainly through Phillips began to dominate.Phillips himself fired just wide before he provided the centre from which Dale should have given the visitors the lead, fortunately for Town he headed over the top.

Town threw on Paul Brayson and Robbie Youhill and Youhill made an immediate impact with three blistering runs down the right wing which left the Spartans left flank for dead. From one cross Knight did well to keep out Chilaka’s close range shot and then had to be helped out by his defence after spilling another Youhill centre.

As the game entered the final minute a long centre found Blyth sub Lee Mason uinmarked on the right and his cross fell to ex Town striker Graeme Armstrong who inexplicably scooped over from close range when it looked easier to score.

For Town,it was two points dropped rather than a point gained and there is still work to do to reach safety.
