Recycle your Christmas waste – and your tree

23 December 2011

BinPeople across North Yorkshire are being urged to recycle their Christmas trees at one of the county’s twenty household waste recycling centres.

The county council centres are also the ideal place to recycle tin/aluminium foil, glass, cardboard and Christmas cards. They accept a wide range of materials including plastic bottles, paper and cardboard, food and drinks cans, glass jars and bottles and batteries. Wrapping paper can also be delivered to sites, but due to the metallic content of some wrapping it is unable to be recycled.

For a full range of materials accepted on site visit www.northyorks.gov.uk/hwrc.

Sites are open six days a week from 8.30am to 4pm (closed Wednesdays). Sites are also closed on 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Waste recycling centre locations can be found at www.northyorks.gov.uk/hwrc.

Alternatively, most Christmas waste can be composted. Christmas cards and most wrapping paper can be composted along with fruit and vegetable peelings, cardboard, tea bags and coffee grounds. For more information on composting, and how to purchase a low cost compost bin visit www.letstalklessrubbish/compost.

With all the new toys, games, books and clothes received at Christmas, making space for them can be a challenge. Unwanted items can be taken to charity shops, or reuse organisations. A list can be found at www.letstalklessrubbish.com/reusedirectory.

“We all create a lot of waste at Christmas but most of it need not end up in landfill,” said County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, Executive Member for Waste Management.

“We can all do our bit to reduce, reuse or recycle it, helping save money and the environment.”
