Young tag rugby players from a leading independent prep school took top honours in a West Yorkshire rugby festival.
Members of Belmont Grosvenor School’s Under 9 team took the championship cup at the Tag Rugby Festival, held at Bronte House Prep School at Bradford.
Belmont Grosvenor School, a co-educational prep school based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, near Harrogate, took two teams to the Festival, organised by the Rugby Football Union, governing body of Rugby Union in England.
Boys from Belmont Grosvenor School’s Year 3 and 4 took part in the day, which included a training workshop in the morning, followed by a tag rugby festival in the afternoon.
Members of the Under 8 team won through to the play-offs before being beaten, but the Under 9 team beat off stiff competition from fellow rugby players from Bronte House, Richmond House, Lady Lane, St Mary’s School, Horsforth, and the Froebelian School at Leeds, to take the Festival cup.
The boys were delighted with their win – as was Belmont Grosvenor School’s boys’ PE co-ordinator Chris Dight.
Mr Dight said:
The children thoroughly enjoyed the day playing tag rugby, and really got an awful lot out of it. The morning workshop included a warm up and skills sessions, along with other exercises and drills.
Both teams played incredibly well and were delighted at having done so well. It was a very inclusive event and great to see everyone working so well as a team.
Belmont Grosvenor School is set in 20 acres of countryside – pupils at the school enjoy a wide range of sporting opportunities, including rugby, football, hockey, cricket and tennis.
Pupils of all abilities are given the chance to compete in competitions, from friendly games and house matches to inter-school and national contests.
