The North Yorkshire Police have clarified that there were not 60 arrests in York city centre over the weekend.
The weekend was a largely typical weekend and the stories in some publications have grossly exaggerated any problems, portraying a situation of a “weekend of violence in the City”
A spokesperson for the North Yorkshire Police said:
The figure which has been reported actually relates to the number of arrests throughout the whole of York on Friday 19 August and Saturday 20 August 2011 – the same number of arrests recorded the previous weekend (Friday 12 and Saturday 13 August 2011).
Officers dealt with a number of incidents of disorder in the city centre but they were largely minor in nature and nobody was seriously injured.
The force was well-prepared and had enough resources in place to deal with the large number of visitors to York over the weekend, due to the Ebor Festival being extended to Saturday for the first time.
