MBE awarded to Knaresborough flood risk manager in Queen’s Birthday Honours

7 June 2022

A Knaresborough man has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his work to protect people across Yorkshire from the devastating effects of flooding and for services to his local community.

Bill Rodham, who lives in Knaresborough, is a Flood Programme Team Leader at the Environment Agency where he has worked for over 30 years. He has been recognised for his leadership and ambassadorial skills that have driven £600m of investment in flood defences across Yorkshire.

Outside work, Bill has been heavily involved in supporting his local community, with voluntary and charitable services spanning over 26 years. He devotes much of his free time to the Gracious Street Methodist Church where he has used his engineering and financial skills to oversee and raise money for the Church’s refurbishment.

Bill said:

I feel incredibly fortunate to work in a role that has a positive impact on the communities we serve, reducing the impact flooding has on people’s lives, livelihoods and mental health. Each day brings new challenges, making it such a rewarding environment to work in.

As we continue to respond the climate emergency, flooding will increasingly impact on our day to day lives and so I would like to recognise the great work of all the flood risk managers across Yorkshire who work tirelessly in their communities to minimise the impact of flooding and to make people and places more resilient.

The award also recognises the voluntary work I do, and it is great to be able to give a little back to support the people of Knaresborough. I am conscious though, that I am one of many who make the town special and who willingly give up their time, talents and energy to sustain and develop the community.

  • Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Bill volunteered to serve as a marshal at the Harrogate Vaccination Centre where he offered assistance and guidance to the public.
  • An active member of the Knaresborough Connectors, Bill has provided extensive support to those less fortunate for over two decades.
