Soroptimists Knit Garlands of Buttercups For Dementia Forward

25 April 2022

To help celebrate the 10th anniversary of Dementia Forward , members of Soroptimist International of Harrogate and District were asked to knit/crochet hundreds of buttercups. These were then used to make garlands to decorate Dementia Forward’s HQ at The Hub in Burton Leonard.

Five club members took up the challenge and produced over 250 buttercups of various sizes. Two Club members, President Val Hills and Maureen Ingleton (who led the knitting team) were invited to join the celebrations at Burton Leonard. This was very well attended by over 100 guests including the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Jo Ropner, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Harrogate, Cllr. and Mrs. Trevor Chapman. The buttercup garlands were a focal point around the porch and railings and were much admired by guests and locals alike.

SI Harrogate and District have committed to support dementia forward for two years with both financial and practical support. To help celebrate their 10th anniversary and to promote the services they provide for those suffering from dementia and their carers/families, Dementia Forward is arranging events in all the areas they cover. The garlands will be removed and transported to each event.

President Val Hills said:

This was an extremely worthwhile cause and it was a real pleasure to provide practical assistance. We were made very welcome by the team and volunteers at the centre, being thanked particularly by Jill Quinn, founder and CEO of Dementia Forward in her speech of welcome.
