New online resources to explore the Commonwealth War Graves in Harrogate

8 November 2020

The Commonwealth War Grave Commission  have developed a series of downloadable resources entitled Our War Graves, Your History which include local stories. Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery is one of the 3 sites we are featuring for the North East of England: https://www.cwgc.org/our-war-graves-your-history/explore-great-britain/north-east-region/

You are able to access historical information about the site as well as some interesting pieces from our archive about Stonefall and its CWGC casualties.

Available for download on the page is a walking tour of Stonefall – it includes the story of the Canadian Hannah brothers about whom I spoke to you last year when you  visited the site.

Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery was created in 1914, but many burials are airmen who died during the Second World War when bomber command bases were established across Yorkshire. They include men and women from across the Commonwealth, including the Canadian brothers Lloyd and Harold Hannah, killed within weeks of each other and now buried together in Harrogate.
