Environmental Considerations: Eco-Friendly Motor Oil Options

7 December 2023

In recent years, consumer preferences have shifted markedly towards environmentally friendly products and practices, and the automotive industry is no exception. As environmental responsibility continues to grow, the demand for environmentally friendly motor oils is also increasing significantly.

Conventional motor oils and their impact on the environment
Conventional motor oils derived from fossil fuels have long been the standard choice. However, the production and use of these oils degrades the environment. The process of extracting, refining and transporting conventional motor oils releases greenhouse gases and other pollutants into the atmosphere. In addition, improper disposal of used motor oil poses a serious threat to ecosystems, as it can contaminate soil and water sources.

Environmentally friendly motor oils

As awareness of environmental issues grows, consumers are looking for alternatives that align with their environmental values. This has led to the popularity of eco-friendly motor oils.

When green motor oils are produced, the amount of carbon dioxide emissions is less than the amount of emissions associated with conventional oil production.

Another aspect of eco-friendly motor oils is the use of eco-friendly ingredients in their composition. Some manufacturers incorporate renewable resources such as vegetable oils or recycled materials into their motor oils. This reduces dependence on limited fossil fuel resources and promotes circular economy in the automotive industry.

Some eco-friendly motor oils are designed to improve engine efficiency, resulting in lower fuel consumption. This not only benefits the environment but also allows consumers to save money on petrol.

Selection of engine oil and frequency of its change

During operation, oil changes its properties under the influence of external factors. There comes a point when it can no longer fulfil its functions and needs to be changed. Engine oil change intervals and the type of oil suitable for your car depend on various factors, including year of manufacture, engine type, operating conditions and manufacturer’s recommendations. Take the Ford Transit for example. Ford usually recommends specific oil formulations for its vehicles. Engine oil for Ford Transit, whether diesel or petrol engine, is often specified by viscosity, e.g. 5W-30, 5W-40.

The owner’s manual is the most reliable source of information on recommended oil type and change intervals.

Biodegradable motor oils

One of the notable advances in environmentally friendly motor oils is the development of biodegradable motor oils. These oils break down naturally and decompose over time, minimising the damage they cause to the environment.

Biodegradable motor oils reduce the risk of soil and water contamination, ensuring that even in the event of a spill or improper disposal, the environmental impact is significantly reduced.

Some problems

The choice of environmentally friendly engine oils supports the automotive industry’s transition to sustainability. It sends a clear signal to manufacturers that consumers favour environmentally friendly products, stimulating further innovation in this area.

Although the proliferation of environmentally friendly motor oils is increasing, certain challenges remain. Some consumers may be hesitant due to concerns about performance, availability or cost. Manufacturers and retailers can play a critical role in addressing these concerns by educating consumers about the benefits of green motor oil options and making them more affordable.

As technology advances and consumer awareness increases, the development and adoption of environmentally friendly motor oils will likely continue to accelerate. By choosing such oils, consumers are doing their part to reduce their ecological footprint, contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to vehicle maintenance.

As the industry continues to evolve, it is important for manufacturers, retailers and consumers to prioritise and invest in products that are environmentally responsible.
