GCSE success at Queen Mary’s School

25 August 2022

Pupils and staff at Queen Mary’s School, between Ripon and Thirsk, are celebrating another year of outstanding GCSE results, with 31% of entries achieving Grade 8-9s. This year’s excellent results highlight remarkable value-added scores allowing entry for all into their first choice of sixth form. Destinations include Fettes College in Edinburgh, Uppingham School in Rutland and Ripon Grammar School.

Special congratulations go to Eulalie Burrows from Sowerby, who attended Queen Mary’s for 13 years. Her outstanding GCSE results, 9 subjects at Grade 9, were accompanied by a swathe of awards on Speech Day, including Mathematics, French, Latin and Physics. The Senior Speech and Drama cup, which Eulalie received jointly, reflects the diversity of her talents and as she embodies the values of Queen Mary’s School, she was also awarded the Woodard Ethos Prize. Eulalie will head to The Mount School, after being offered the choice of an Academic or Performing Arts Scholarship.

Alongside excellent academic results, Year 11 pupils displayed sporting, musical and artistic excellence as they thrived both inside and outside of the classroom.
Music Captain and Music Scholar, Annabelle Dowell, from Thirsk, was a Class A winner at the British Flute Society Competition, performed solo with Harrogate Philharmonic Orchestra and achieved her ABRSM Diploma in Flute, after being awarded a Distinction for ABRSM Grade 8.

Deputy Head Girl and talented artist Grace Calvert, from Leyburn, received a Grade 9 in Art. She developed work around the concept of ‘Play’ building on her love of narrative and storytelling in drawing. She will now take up an Art Scholarship at Giggleswick School.

Mrs Carole Cameron, Head of Queen Mary’s School, is delighted:

These marvellous results are a testament to great commitment and talent from pupils and teachers alike, which has allowed the girls to thrive academically and beyond. It is heartening to see pupils who have been at Queen Mary’s for many years achieving excellent grades. However we have also enhanced the life chances of those who have joined us more recently. Queen Mary’s ethos, with the aim to balance academic excellence with wonderful all-round opportunities, leads to great achievement and success.

Queen Mary’s offers a broad and exciting curriculum, allowing pupils to pursue their interests and passions within small classes designed for success. The next Open Days will take place on Friday 30 September and Saturday 1 October.
