Harrogate Soroptimists attended a Regional Council Meeting on Saturday, 18 June 2022.
Nearly 100 Soroptimists from all over Yorkshire met at Askham Grange women’s prison. They were also delighted and honoured to be joined by Soroptimist International President, Maureen Maguire. Maureen spoke about the challenges facing the world and the impact this is having on women.
They heard about the progress the President’s Appeal, Opening Doors to a Bright Future, is already making. They also heard what life at Askham Grange prison was like for the women during Covid lockdowns.
Two prisoners spoke about how important the education and support they receive is and that they valued the books and craft materials Soroptimist sent to them. It was a heartfelt presentation that left many moved to tears. After a fantastic lunch which was prepared and served by the women who live at the prison, many Soroptimist bought plants grown in the nurseries before leaving.
President Val Hills said:
Being here at Askham Grange Prison was a very moving experience and we thank all those who participated and gave us an insight into their lives during Covid. It was also an honour to have our International President, Maureen Maguire, here today. Many thanks to Regional President Lindsay Green for organising such a fascinating day.
