Work has started on a housing development called The Paddocks, which will see Brierley Homes Limited provide nine new homes in the village of Great Ouseburn, near Harrogate.
- Brierley Homes is North Yorkshire County Council’s housing development company, which is part of the Brierley Group, the trading arm of the council. The group was established in 2017 to bring together council-owned companies with the aim of improving front line services.
- NY Highways, also part of the Brierley Group, is a new organisation, formed earlier this year to look after the county’s roads.
The first phase focusses on a highways scheme to provide the access to the new development as well as the installation of traffic-calming measures on Branton Lane.
The work includes a meticulously planned scheme to safeguard an avenue of lime trees.
That work is being overseen by Brooks Ecological and features an innovative root protection system to ensure they are not damaged by traffic when the development is complete.
This phase of the project involves the company working in partnership with NY Highways, another North Yorkshire County Council-owned company, which is responsible for highways maintenance and improvement schemes across the county’s network.
It is expected that building work on the new homes will begin next year, after the access works have been completed.

Unfortunately part of the so called meticulous plan to safeguard the lime trees meant felling a healthy tree in order to gain access to the site.
….so there is a level of convenience associated with the so called “meticulous plan” and most probably influenced by a financial decision ….something on the lines of “the tree is in the way so cut it down regardless”.
I was recently refused planning for a “simple” trim to a tree with a TPO but this is probably because I am not the council needing to eliminate an obstacle likely to hinder a nice big fat cash cow.
Little wonder the council comes in for such criticism …… no one trusts them !
Please no more new build housing estates on green fields in Great Ouseburn. We have our fair share. We already have traffic calming, more of it wouldn’t be needed if you weren’t building more houses to create the extra traffic.
