North Yorkshire libraries are encouraging residents to discover and enjoy their community heritage as part of Local and Community History Month in May.
Inspired by this year’s theme The High Street, libraries will be sharing resources such as maps and newspapers from their collections on social media.
A series of pre-recorded talks will be aired on the highstreets of Scarborough, Skipton and Northallerton, as well as railways around Scarborough on the library Facebook page @nycclibraries.
There will also be a talk on the Great North Yorkshire’s Great Sons and Daughters – a recent project bringing to life the resources held at the County Record Office.
Customers at Scarborough, Harrogate and Skipton will be able to access Historical Town Walking Trails via the What Was Here app which can be found in the App Store for iOS and in Google Play for Android devices.

We are pleased to get behind Local and Community History Month as it’s a great way to encourage communities to come together and share an interest in their local heritage.
Our libraries hold a wealth of resources from local history collections to maps. We also offer online research tools including British Newspaper Archive, Ancestry and Find my Past.
The County Record Office at Northallerton houses an online database of images and records, and the online shop sells reproduction images, maps and publications.

Over 40 libraries around the county have been busy welcoming customers back through the doors since the relaxing of coronavirus restrictions earlier this month with safeguards in place.
Most libraries are allowing customers to browse and to choose their own books to borrow, and public computers and some study spaces are bookable for limited timeslots.
Services and opening hours will vary between libraries, so before visiting customers should check with their library or on the website at www.northyorks.gov.uk/library-and-record-office-services-during-coronavirus-covid-19
The County Record Office in Northallerton will reopen tomorrow (April 27), with renewed access to more than five miles of fascinating historic records stretching from the 12th century to the present day. For more information please visit www.northyorks.gov.uk/county-record-office
