Harrogate Grammar School student, Jack Pearce in year 12, was recently awarded the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship of its type in the UK to inspire and nurture students to be the country’s future leaders of the Engineering profession. Harrogate Grammar School is affiliated to the scheme. Students have to go through a rigorous selection process which involves being nominated by their Design Technology teacher, completing a comprehensive application and sitting a two-hour aptitude exam. Jack was successful in all the stages and despite the cancellation of selection interviews due to COVID-19 restrictions went on to secure a scholarship.
Normally the scholarship would have been awarded at a prestigious ceremony in either Edinburgh or London whereupon Jack would have also have met his sponsor however due to the current situation Jack received the scholarship via email this year. Sponsors assist their students in various ways, for example; valuable work experience, support for their curriculum projects and a personal mentor which can help with aspects of their studies and career planning. Jack will receive £600 in scholarship to support him through his A level studies. Being awarded the scholarship reflects Jacks passion, commitment and dedication to his studies.
Jack said:
I am extremely proud and grateful for receiving this scholarship, it is going to provide me with many opportunities and a great experience. The scholarship will be invaluable in assisting me with my ambition to become an engineer, I am looking forward to working with my sponsor who will be able to provide advice throughout my A Level studies and connect me to relevant industry links. My scholarship also extends to supporting me in my next steps when considering University choices, for example Nottingham, who offer a special £1500 bursary to Arkwright scholars.
