Tickets have gone on sale for the 2018 Knaresborough Festival of Entertainment and Visual Arts, touted to offer the widest range of events tailored to different interests in the Festival’s 18-year history. As ever, the Festival starts on the second Friday in August and runs for 10 days, making it the largest town festival in Yorkshire to run through the summer school holidays.
Tony Cerexhe, chairman of the feva organising committee, said:
In recent years, we have managed to attract more varied attractions for people. This year there is a new focus on workshops for arts and crafts. These will offer sessions geared to creativity and mindfulness, watercolour painting, self-publishing, fabric weaving, the making of scarecrows and trinket boxes.
While we have run workshops in the past, there is a lot more and a wider range this year.
In addition, we have music of all types – classical, choral, blues, folk, rock and roll, jazz and swing. The tribute act on the middle Wednesday of feva, is Swede Dreamz, who reprise Abba numbers. In addition, the great Snake Davis and Burden of Paradise are returning, along with Phil Lyons and the New Vintage Band, and the much-anticipated concert by Edwina Hayes – the ‘Sweetest Voice in England!
There are also plays, poetry recitals, book readings, dance performances, art exhibitions, special menu offering from Knaresborough’s eateries, and a number of 800th-year memorials for Knaresborough’s famous hermit, St Robert.
We are again staging free street entertainment on each year, which has become such a hallmark of feva. There is something to be found going on most of the time, ranging from old favourites such as Properpunch, the Great Mandavi and Uncle Bob, to Knaresborough Mummers, town criers’ competition and the enchanting youngsters from Studio 3.
Altogether, there are some 84 events staged during the Festival by feva groups. In addition, Henshaws has its Urban Beach every day during feva, which has proved a huge draw for parents, grandparents but especially small children. Henshaws imports 40 tonnes of play sand which is spread around straw bales and is a superb attraction for children during the holidays.
On Saturday 18 August feva builds to a climax with the free Picnic in the Park in the grounds of Knaresborough House, featuring live bands and DJ performances. For the first time this will be accompanied over the same weekend by the Lions’ Beer Festival, which offers over 20 different real ales, along with ciders, wine, Pimms and food.

Knaresborough’s Urban Beach – Henshaws – throughout feva
Throughout feva festival-goers will be able to again enjoy the Urban Beach in the lively setting of Henshaws Arts and Crafts Centre on Bond End. This has been a smash hit with children and their elders in past years, and features sand, games, loungers, chairs and tables. There will be live and DJ music much of the time, and there is food and drink from Henshaws’ cafe to enjoy. Jez is one of the busiest live performers in the country, and his songs are among the most widely sung by other performers like Fairport Convention, the Dubliners, Bob Fox, and by the new breed of stars like the Unthanks, Young’uns and Duhks. Jez will make festival appearances this year at Warwick, Chester, Whitby, Broadstairs and Sidmouth, and tours of the UK, Holland and North America. The Radio Ballads series continues to enthral, and major concerts based on The Ballad of Child Migration are lined up for the Autumn.

Each day of feva from 10 to 19 August there will be a chance to ‘meet’ St Robert the Hermit, or a modern version. There is a walk from Castlegate Bookshop in the centre of town, where you collect your map and instructions, down to the river and along the three miles to the actual cave in which he lived. There is an audio guide to the life of the Hermit available on the website. Choose your story, download your guide and put on your walking shoes.
