Harrogate Spa Tennis Centre has added two sports chairs for wheelchair users to its facilities.
Following a generous donation from the North Yorkshire County Council locality budget scheme and the Dan Maskell Tennis Foundation, the sports chairs were bought to celebrate British success in the men’s and women’s wheelchair doubles at Wimbledon 2017.
Former North Yorkshire County Councillor David Simister, who secured the funding from his discretionary budget, said:
Earlier this year, Carolyn approached me asking if I had any money left in my budget, and if I had, would I consider funding a specialised wheelchair for disabled people to use on the courts?
I had, I did, and it was a privilege to be invited to the club to meet Paul and see him using the wheelchair. It is a fantastic piece of kit and delighted to see Spa Tennis Club taking a lead in inclusivity.
Carolyn Rothwell from Harrogate Spa Tennis Centre said:
As well as the new chairs, three wheelchair accessible parking bays with easy access to the courts have been installed, allowing users of all experience and abilities to use the facilities.
TennisHarrogate, who are based here, are trained to provide excellent wheelchair tennis coaching, and classes are available every Saturday from 1pm to 3pm.
Harrogate Spa Tennis Centre is located at Claro Park, on Claro Road, and is fully inclusive and welcoming all ages and abilities to the club, to enjoy tennis, a sport for life.
