A new chief executive has taken over the reins at Martin House Hospice Care for Children and Young People.
Martin Warhurst, 43, joined Martin House in July following a career in social housing and finance. He replaces Angela Monaghan, who stepped down in May.
Mr Warhurst said:
It’s always been important to me that I work in areas where I can make a positive impact on people’s lives, and I like to be part of an organisation which has a family feel.
So I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with the excellent team at Martin House, contributing to making a real difference to the lives of children and their families.
I am really looking forward to building on the many strengths of this fantastic organisation. I want to understand where we are, what we need to be a truly excellent organisation, and how we get there.
A chartered accountant by training, Mr Warhurst spent ten years as an audit and advisory consultant to the social housing sector, before joining Cestria Community Housing in County Durham, first as director of finance and corporate services and then becoming managing director in 2014.
He grew up in Wakefield and has two sons, aged 11 and 14, while his interests include running, cycling, playing guitar, football and Formula 1.
Mr Warhurst added:
My father needed the care of his local hospice, and the assistance it gave was the bright light in a very difficult situation. Until I experienced it first-hand, I didn’t realise the impact hospices have on people’s lives.
Martin House provides care to children and young people with life-limiting illnesses – and their families – across West, North and East Yorkshire at its Boston Spa hospice, in hospitals and in their own homes.
Will Lifford, chair of trustees at Martin House, said:
I’m delighted to welcome Martin as our new chief executive. He has already demonstrated a real understanding of our ethos and values. I am confident that he will lead Martin House successfully as we continue to develop and provide even more support to our children, young people and families.
