Dementia care in the NHS is the focus of the next hugely popular Medicine for Members events hosted by Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust.
Consultants and senior nurses from Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust will be talking about how care is provided for patients with dementia.
Topics to be discussed include the relaunch of the Butterfly Scheme, which is a system of hospital care for people living with dementia or who simply find that their memory isn’t as reliable as it used to be. Also covered will be staff Dementia Champions on the hospital wards, environmental improvements, delirium (acute confusion), the acute hospital liaison service, raising awareness of dementia and staff training.
The events are expected to be very popular so two sessions are being held, on Wednesday 4 May at 6-7.15pm and on Tuesday 24 May at 12.15-1.30pm.
Both presentations will take place in the Lecture Theatre, Strayside Education Centre, 3rd Floor, Harrogate District Hospital. Tea, coffee, juice and biscuits will be served 30 minutes before each presentation.
Jill Foster, Chief Nurse at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, said:
Dementia will touch all of our lives in one way or another, whether that be personally or professionally. We don’t really know the actual numbers of people living with the early stages of dementia, but what we do know is that it is increasing all the time. Every baby born in the UK now has a one in three chance of developing it within their lifetime.
You can live well with dementia; we are working really hard at HDFT to improve dementia care with training and awareness like this, through work with our environment, working with patients and carers and further education with our staff.

Governor Surgery drop-in sessions
In addition to the Medicine for Members events, HDFT’s Council of Governors is inviting members to raise questions, comments or ideas with their Governor. The next Governor Surgery drop-in sessions are:
Wednesday 4 May at 4.30-5.30pm
Tuesday 24 May at 1.45-2.45pm
Both sessions are being held in the Enterprise Room, Strayside Education Centre, 3rd Floor, Harrogate District Hospital. These sessions will give you the opportunity to meet and talk to your elected Governor(s) and give them any feedback on the Trust.
Pamela Allen, Deputy Chair of Governors, said:
Governors are your representatives and spokespersons to Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. We are keen to chat with you about your questions, comments and concerns about the Trust and the services that it provides. We want to hear what you have to say so please drop in and meet some of your Governors. We look forward to seeing you.
