Silly season
This will peradventure be the last column for a couple of weeks, as summer has arrived and I’ve a tonne of bizzarely long working weeks ahead. I expect I’ll find it hard, inbetween DJing, grabbing half an hours nap on my sofa, and having “wet wipe” showers backstage, to write lots of nonsense about the type of nonsense I get up to. Factor in the amount of time it takes for me to chose which stupid waistcoat – or indeed weskit if I am feeling particularly like an asse – matches my almost too perfectly tatty brogues, and you will see the demands on my time are mounting up.
It starts today… like now.
I’m “artist liaison” for Mark Morriss out of The Bluetones as he is playing 10 Devonshire Place tonight (Wednesday – 17 June 15). It’s free and starts from about 7pm, so I will be warming up with some Jamaican Street Food there before hand.

Tomorrow I am back there for my open deck night “Porkies Prime Cuts” which has a slight Beatles angle to it since it is Sir Paul McCartney’s birthday, and I couldn’t think of a better theme than that.
Then it really kicks off on Friday. I’m opening The Big Bike Bash on the Stray at 4pm. This is to celebrate one year on (ish) from the whole “le grande depart” thing. I was a cynic about the tour de France affair, so consequently missed out on playing the big stage. Occasionally as a DJ I have regrets; for example, I regret choosing to become a DJ; it is after all a job that has limited options for the over 40s. Nevertheless I have 6 months left in me yet, and I remember bitterly regretting not getting involved with Le Tour on the basis that I was “too busy”. Technically I was too busy, but still, I have decided to no longer let details like that bother me. When the tour de france was such a great day, I was gutted that I could have been involved and had let other commitments get in the way, so I am really looking forward to being a part of this, albeit smaller, local affair. At the end of the day, I am much more suited to local community stuff, indeed, whilst it was against my will, I have done hundreds of hours community service following several misunderstandings in public areas.
I’m playing 4 til 6 on Friday, then Stray FM take over for the evening. I’m looking forward to working with Stray as I will get chance to see how professionals do it, and I am hoping to meet the girl who sings the Abbey electrical advert as she sounds nice. Whilst people party on the stray into the night, I am off to play Manchester to an ungodly hour in the morning. I’ll then drive home for a tidy 2 hours sleep before doing it all again the next day. Things start at 11 on Saturday and I am playing til 4 inbetween some ossum live bands. If you want to see the full event line up (for example if you are interested in things that are not just me, though that is hard for me to picture) click: https://www.harrogate-news.co.uk/2015/06/16/harrogate-big-bike-bash-full-schedule-of-events/
For best effect I would come and see me on each day and compare the sprightly figure I cut on Friday afternoon with the disheveled, bewildered and technically inept form I present at 9 (N.I.N.E.) on Sunday morning. I will no doubt by that time be convinced I am covered in spiders, or perhaps that I am a humming bird of some kind.
The Big Bike isn’t just about cycling – though there is plenty of that; there is a participation circus, live bands and singers, Stray FM’s roadshow, BMX demos, food and drinks, Zumba, a giant screen (showing Paddington on Friday evening, so take a pic-nic) and then of course there are the races themselves. The town centre is closed for a team race round the finishing route le tour took, and also a race round town which as far as I know is the first time something like this has been done in Harrogate. There are team events which have some f the UKs finest talent involved… honestly, there is just loads on, so I really hope to see you there! I will be the guy who plays “Bicycle race” by Queen 7 times. Maybe 8.
Off yer bike
For something on Saturday night that’s a little different to all this, Retro Bar has got a Hardcore Punk gig, with DEATH JOB, Eric Bana & Little Drafts plus more bands. This is run by hardy hardcore perennial crew the NYHC who always put on really fun and friendly gigs.
Tonight, Wednesday, at theTap n’ Spile Pub, there is Poems Prose & Pints. This is a spoken word group and has special guest Oz Hardwick. It’s only £1 to go to, and I really like the events, so much so that I am trying to shift my gigs around in the future so I can get back to going regularly.
Next week; go wild in the country! Action in the Valleys
Lightwater Valley Country Music Festival is running Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th from 11am ‘til 5pm. There is a really strong line up of talent from around the region, and theoretically there should be a picture of that very line up somewhere around this text what I am writing now, depending upon whether or not the editor of Harrogate-news read my cover notes. He usually does, as otherwise I give him a right spanking. We have a very complex relationship.
I am MCing the stage for that, but am really hoping I can get some time off to go on the rides too. And maybe play the crazy golf. Ooh ooh and go on that minature train they have. I think I am too big to go climbing in Fort William these days though sadface. There will also be vintage clothing, street food and loads of other stuff that people like me like, so if you could come along and DJ for me so I can go do all that stuff that would be ace.
Also that weekend, on the Sunday 28th, Harrogate welcomes back the 1940s day to The Valley Gardens, which was a great success last year. On the Saturday night there is a Swing to victory party at The Manhatten Club which should be retty ossum too.
All in all, plenty to be going on with, so choose your poison, drink it responsibly and stock up on Suncream.
Cheers for reading, and here’s the listings for this week and beyond. Trev x x x
