All the Bs. Bedfest, Bike Bash, Bluetones and barious other things.
Bedrace Day
This weekend is Bedrace day in Knaresborough – in itself is good day (and occasionally a regrettable forgotten night afterwards) – but since it started a few years ago, Henshaw’s “Bedfest” (which runs alongside the main event just a few hundred yards up the road) is a brilliant way to get more from an already great day out.
It is tricky to be certain when the roads are closed in Knaresborough, the signs I’ve seen say from midday onwards, but there is nowt on the website I can find, so I will have to trust the signs (I have trust issues with signs ever since god sent me that burning bush telling me people would enjoy it if I grew a mullet). However I do know for a fact that Bedfest commences its entertainment at 12pm. I will be on site DJing and MCing (not rapping, just introducing the bands), and if you don’t like me that’s OK cos I leave to go to DJ Manchestah at 6ish so the dream team of DJ Rory Hoy and compère Graham Chalmers take over for the rest of proceedings. There are loads of bands and artists on the bill, too many to list, all the way down to the bottom of the bill, where underneath the toilet attendants and “clapper best boy grip” is my name, which legitimizes my claim that I do a lot of work for charidee, though I don’t like to talk about it.
Thursday
Before that, this Thursday Harrogate’s legendary indie night Charm is at Major Tom’s Social. I went to the last one and it were right good, so am looking forward to this.
The headliners are The Seagulls, and it’s only 4 quid to get in.
It should be a splendid night as before hand I am going to my local 10 Devonshire Place for “Rum, Reggae & Records” which has Martin Dodsworth playing the finest Jamaican sounds, with food provided by Jah Zipper. It’s £10 for a Jamaican Redstripe, Jamaican Rum and Jamaican dish with 2 sides… plantain and dumplins for me I think. Last time the street food at 10Dev was on I put on about a stone, so if you see me jogging my way to Major Tom’s afterwards that is because there will be more hole than belt if I get more put in.
Bluetones
Next week is another busy one, too. The lead singer of The Bluetones, Mark Morriss, is playing at 10 Dev on Wednesday 17th. I’m really looking forward to that; I love their 90’s stuff and he will be playing the hits, plus Mark’s solo output is excellent too, sounding a bit like some of the contemporary indie bands who are emerging (Temples, Circa Waves, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and so on). So good new stuff and plenty of classics then. Oh, and it’s free to get in, so I would suggest you turn up early. Supports will be on from about half 7, but the pub is only small and when they had Tom Hingley (Ex-Inspiral Carpets) playing they had to turn people awy who left it till too late to arrive.
Alsoat the same venue on Thursday 18th, I’m having my open deck vinyl night “Porkies Prime Cuts”; it is a “beatles and Wings” special, as it’s Paul McCartney’s birthday and all the DJs get free Jamaican hot wings. Apart from the tricksie vegemetarians who get some Linda McCartney sausages.
Big Bike Bash
Next weekend (19th, 20th & 21st) is a thing called the “Big Bike Bash”. You have perhaps seen the signs saying that Harrogate town center will be closed off for traffic for it. Whilst I have never trusted signs (since god sent me a burning copy of Kate Bushes album “Kick inside” that told me he was called Cathy, and I should come home) this is actually true as on Saturday there is an opportunity for people to race the course that the Tour de France things followed last year. Most of the race places have been booked up but there are still some available for some races, and there are also universal participation rides on the Sunday. Things actually start on the Friday, with live music, plus me doing a bit of DJing and Stray FM doing a roadshow type thing, which should all be fun. There will be a full entertainment village, with circus marquees, food stalls and plenty to do, see, eat, and indeed smell. The best thing of all is it’s free to attend, so if the weather is on our side this will be an ace weekend. It is set up to keep the ball rolling (or the gears turning I guess) from last year’s Le Grande Depart and if it is a success there will be more resources available for it next year, so get involved and show your support!
The running man
My mate Smiler got in touch and asked me to help spread the word on some sponsored stuff he is doing for Thea’s Trust.
Thea’s Trust is a registered charity, raising awareness and vital funds to support families and children with MPS, a rare and life limiting genetic condition. Thea was born on July 23, 2013. Six months later, she was diagnosed with MPS I Hurler Syndrome. Thea tragically passed away on the 10th May 2014, she fought so hard but could not overcome multiple complications throughout her treatment and died peacefully in her mother’s arms.
My mate Smiler is a friend of the family and by his own admission is not “super fit”. Last year he was classed as obese, so decided it was time to take action and challenge himself, plus raise some money for a very worthy cause.
The thing is, I think he has gone a bit mental.
Like, most people might do a sponsored bike ride or swim or something. Smiler has however signed himself up to do 14 (that’s right: F.O.U.R.T.E.E.N.) Tough Mudder events.
If you don’t know what is involved here are some examples:
Yorkshire Warrior http://yorkshirewarrior.com/ is 10 miles across the Yorkshire countryside with hills, bogs, a river walk, an 800 meter underground tunnel, fire, ice bath, barbed wire, electric fence, log carry, crawling and climbing over 30 obstacles. Total Warrior http://www.totalwarrior.co.uk/ is a 12km race with 30 punishing obstacles including peaks of pain, the shocker, human BBQ, the plunge, and death valley to name a few and some kind of clay/mud/quicksand that saps your strength with every step. The Dirty Weekend http://www.ratracedirtyweekend.com/ is by far the longest race over 20 miles and 200 obstacles all of which are designed to push your limits from you first step to your last.
Smiler, who has clearly taken leave of his senses, is doing 7 UK Tough Mudder’s across the country on both Saturday and Sunday so that’s 2 races per weekend, yep, I’m no maths genius, but that makes 14 events. As he puts it “the real challenge lies (in) running one of these (hard enough for most people) then getting up the next day and doing it again.”
Here is the page for donations, www.justgiving.com/Alan-Evans8/ So far Smiler (real name Alan, I never knew that) has raised a massive £520.00 and says he would love to get that up to a grand by the time he has finished his ordeal, which he is about halfway through, so if you can afford to give anything, that would be nice. I just gave some cos I don’t want to tell you to do anything I wouldn’t do.
Finally, listen to the new album by Slaves, it is brilliant. They are in no way a local band, but this is the only platform I have, so listen to me, and listen to them.
Cheers for reading, and here’s the listings for this week and beyond.
