An international competition awaits a Rossett School student after he was selected for a place on the Team England taekwondo squad.
Year 13 student Thomas Henley, 17, will compete in both the junior and senior categories at the Commonwealth Championships in Scotland this November.
It follows his success at the national championships, when he won gold in the junior advanced category.
Thomas, who is from Harrogate and trains with the Horizon Taekwondo Academy in Bradford, said: I haven’t been training for as long as most people – only three to four years.
I took to it quite well and I’ve been training hard. I’ll be doing more sessions ready to compete in November.
I hope I’ll do quite well in the junior category. The senior category will be quite a challenge because I’m at the bottom of that age group, but it will be good experience.
Thomas, who is studying biology, chemistry and PE at A level, said his parents have been very supportive since he took up taekwondo, taking him as far afield as Sweden, Majorca and Holland for training and competitions.
Rossett School headteacher Helen Woodcock said: Earning the chance to represent England is a great achievement and we are very proud of Thomas.
It is particularly impressive that he has been selected for the senior squad despite being relatively young. We hope the competition in November will lead on to even more success for him in the future.
